Hankie Aprons - (to cook in, not to blow your nose).

Level: Beginner (most of my projects will be for beginners for a while:)
Time to Complete: approximately one hour per apron.

We recently celebrated our second oldest daughter's eight-year-old birthday with fourteen girls. And, yes, we had the party at our house. Believe me, we had checked out different locations that could host the party but in the end we decided that a party at home would be our best option. How do you fill 2 hours at home with so many girls though?! THAT was the question:) We decided to take a creative approach (since I'm on a creative kick anyway) and have a "cooking" theme for the party! While walking around Michael's one day, I discovered plain white hankies and an idea popped into my head. "I'll just cut the hankies in half and quickly make sashes for each one!" Umm, yeah, not as easy of a project as I later found out. My plan was to have half of the girls decorating their aprons with fabric markers and puffy paints, while the other half made homemade pretzels (ya know, like the ones you would buy in the mall).

Everything went fine except that making 15 aprons (I used one as an example for the girls) took about an hour per apron to make. But, once again, I learned a lot and that's part of the point in me trying something new! I purchased multiple patterns of fabric so that the girls would have choices and used a 50% off coupon from Michael's on the puffy paint. In the end, they weren't as inexpensive as I thought they would be (by the time I bought fabric, thread, hankies, paint and fabric markers) but if you already have some of these items, it would be a good way to put them to use!

Materials Needed:
package of 2 white hankies from Michael's
thread
sewing materials
fabric - (for one child-size apron) will need 1/2 yard
fabric markers
puffy paint for fabric

Step One:
Cut hankies in half and iron. These are the supplies that I purchased.

Step Two:
Cut fabric into three separate pieces and iron.
2 - 6"x30" (for sashes)
1 - 6"x22" (for waist band) - use different length if using other material besides Michael's hankies

Step Three: Sew sashes onto band.
First, lay band on top of one sash so that right sides are together.

Next, pin together and sew a 5/8" seam onto the 6" sides so that they are evenly matched.

Repeat with the other sash. Place the second sash on the other side of the band (right sides together), pin, and sew together. You will now have one extremely long sash!!

Step Four: Ironing
Go back to the ironing board. Turn long sash right side down and iron seams down onto fabric so that it will lay flat. Turn over and iron other sides of seams so that they are crisp.

Now, with fabric right side up, fold it in half (length wise) and iron the entire long sash in half (right sides together).

Step Five: Sew band to hankie.
Open up your ironed fabric and place it right side down on top of the hankie. Match up the ends of the band with the ends of the hankie. Pin together and sew together using a 5/8" seam. Go back to ironing board. Flip up fabric over hankie and iron right side up.

Step Six: Sew sashes.
Go back to sewing machine and pin together one sash (right sides together), starting at end of sash. Sew all of the sash together without going onto hankie. Repeat on other side.

Step Seven: Turn sashes right side out.
Reach inside sashes pulling out all of the material that you can. As you get closer to the end, use a wooden spoon to push fabric all the way out. Be sure to push spoon into corners of fabric so that they have neat edges.

Step Eight: Back to ironing board.
First, iron sashes for crisp edges. Next, place apron right side down on ironing board. Iron bottom seam of band up into rest of band. Fold remaining part of band down and fold under 5/8" and iron fold into fabric. Flip apron over and pin together front and back of band, making sure that pins are grabbing back of band.

Step Nine: The final touch.
Sew together band! Great job! Your apron is now ready for decorating!!

Here are some pictures of finished products and party fun!

I made 2 aprons out of each fabric for the girls to choose from.

Each girl signed her name on this one...what a cute idea!

Happy Birthday, Sydney!!
